AC Stops Working in Summer Heat
What to do before calling an HVAC tech when your AC goes out
Don't Panic - Check These First
Before you call an HVAC technician (and potentially pay a service call fee for something simple), try these steps:
1. Check Your Thermostat
- Make sure it's set to COOL, not HEAT or OFF
- Set the temperature at least 5 degrees below the current room temperature
- If it's a battery-powered thermostat, replace the batteries
- Try switching it to OFF, wait 30 seconds, then back to COOL
2. Check Your Air Filter
A clogged air filter is the #1 cause of AC problems. Find your filter (usually in a return air vent or at the air handler) and check it. If it looks dirty, replace it.
3. Check Your Circuit Breaker
Your AC system typically uses two breakers - one for the indoor unit and one for the outdoor condenser. Check your electrical panel and make sure neither has tripped. If one has, flip it OFF, wait 30 seconds, then flip it back ON.
4. Check the Outdoor Unit
Go outside and look at your condenser unit:
- Is the fan spinning? If not, the unit isn't running.
- Is it covered in debris, leaves, or overgrown plants? Clear at least 2 feet of space around it.
- Is there ice on the lines? This could indicate a refrigerant issue.
5. Check Your Vents
Make sure all supply vents are open and not blocked by furniture.
6. Wait 30 Minutes
If you've turned the system off and back on, wait 30 minutes before deciding it's not working. Some systems have a built-in delay.
Still Not Working?
Time to call a pro. An HVAC technician can diagnose issues like refrigerant leaks, compressor failures, or electrical problems.
