Power Outage Safety Checklist
Stay safe and protect your home during a power outage
When the Power Goes Out
Immediate Steps
- Check if it's just you - Look outside. If neighbors have power, check your circuit breaker panel.
- Report the outage - Call your utility company or check their outage map online (use your phone data).
- Unplug sensitive electronics - Computers, TVs, and appliances can be damaged by power surges when electricity is restored.
- Leave one light on - So you know when power returns.
Food Safety
- Refrigerator: Keeps food cold for about 4 hours if kept closed
- Freezer: Full freezer stays cold for 48 hours; half-full for 24 hours
- Don't open the door unless necessary
- When in doubt, throw it out
Staying Cool in Houston Heat
- Move to the lowest level of your home (heat rises)
- Close blinds and curtains
- Use battery-powered fans
- Drink plenty of water
- Go to a public cooling center if the outage is extended
Generator Safety
- NEVER run a generator indoors, in a garage, or near windows
- Place it at least 20 feet from your home
- Never plug a generator directly into a wall outlet
- Use heavy-duty outdoor extension cords
When to Call an Electrician
- If your breaker panel is buzzing, sparking, or smells like burning
- If you have power everywhere except one circuit
- If your lights flicker or dim when the power comes back
- If you notice any electrical damage after a storm
