Do You Need a 24/7 Emergency Electrician in Houston?
How to tell a real electrical emergency from something that can wait until morning — and what to do right now if it is the real thing.

When electrical is a true emergency
Electrical problems are different from a leak — some are immediate fire or shock risks. Call for emergency help, or 911, if you have:
- A burning smell, smoke, or scorch marks at an outlet or the panel — see burning smell / sparking outlet.
- Sparking, arcing, or exposed wires.
- A warm, buzzing, or humming electrical panel.
- Water touching wiring, outlets, or the panel (a real risk during Houston flooding).
- A partial power loss where some outlets are dead and others are not, especially with a burning smell.
CRITICAL: A burning smell or smoke from an outlet or panel is a fire risk. Kill the breaker if you can do it safely, get everyone out, and call 911. Do not wait to "see if it gets worse."
What is NOT an emergency
Not everything needs a midnight call:
- A single dead outlet (often a tripped GFCI you can reset).
- One tripped breaker that resets and holds.
- A light fixture that stopped working.
These can wait for a normal appointment.
What it costs
| Situation | Typical Houston range |
|---|---|
| After-hours service call | $150 – $350 just to come out |
| Diagnose and repair a circuit | $150 – $600 |
| Panel or breaker repair | $300 – $900 |
As with plumbing, after-hours pricing is higher — you are paying for an immediate response.
The Houston angle
Two local realities matter:
- Storms and outages. After a hurricane or ice storm, know whether the problem is your panel or a CenterPoint outage on the grid. If the whole street is dark, it is the utility — report it and wait; an electrician cannot restore grid power.
- Flooding. If water has reached outlets, wiring, or the panel, do not touch it. Have the power cut at the meter and get a licensed electrician to inspect before anything is re-energized. See our power outage safety guide.
A flooded panel or wiring must be inspected before you turn anything back on. Re-energizing wet electrical is how house fires start.
When to call whom
- 911 / leave the house: active fire, smoke, or a strong burning smell.
- CenterPoint (your utility): the whole area lost power, or a downed line.
- Licensed emergency electrician: sparking, a hot panel, water in the electrical, or a partial outage inside your home only.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is considered an electrical emergency?
A burning smell, smoke, sparking, a warm or buzzing panel, exposed wires, or water touching electrical are true emergencies. A single dead outlet or one tripped breaker that resets is not.
How much does an emergency electrician cost in Houston?
Expect $150 to $350 for an after-hours service call, plus the repair — a circuit diagnosis and repair runs $150 to $600 and panel work $300 to $900. After-hours rates are higher than a scheduled visit.
Is a power outage an electrical emergency?
Not usually. If the whole street is dark, it is a CenterPoint grid outage — report it and wait. It only needs an electrician if the outage is limited to your home, or comes with a burning smell, sparking, or a warm panel.
What should I do if my electrical panel gets wet?
Do not touch it. Have the power cut at the meter and call a licensed electrician to inspect before anything is turned back on. Re-energizing wet wiring is a serious fire risk.
